A couple of days ago, I saw the Ad selector tool in action on Hulu. TBH I did not even know of such a thing so I was really startled when it showed up on my TV and I was asked to pick between 3 types of Progressive Insurance ads. Here is an example of how it looks. I picked this image from this reddit convo
I am not in the market for Insurance. I find the Progressive ads super irritating. But in a maybe not so strange paradox, they are so irritating that they are memorable. And every time I have thought of changing insurance, or buying new insurance, Progressive has been one of the brands I looked into. So irritating through they maybe, their ads work?
Coming back to the Ad selector, the marketeer in me was really excited to see this. Finally, TV advertising is figuring out who to do lead Gen in a trackable way and giving viewers a choice. I like watching ads. I am not super put off by them. If you have a channel like Netflix or Prime or Hulu where you are going to see ads, I think it is better to choose your ad than not. Sort of like choose your poison?
To my surprise, most of the discussion online on this is very negative. People on reddit for e.g. have compared this selection to having a choice between 2 STD’s. I mean yes, ‘none of the above’ would be great and a win-win especially if advertisers don't have to pay for ‘none of the above choices’ and audience doesn't have to sit through an ad. But the hate seems a little excessive to me. Like if you are in the market for say Home insurance, wouldn't you rather see the benefits a brand offers for Home insurance instead of say Auto?
If this concept catches on and they add AI, I would extend it to say, wouldn't you rather see ads for what you are looking to buy than random things that are not interesting?
I have created a poll and would like to know how all of you feel.
Can you answer this poll for me? (Top of page)
